Our library program is aligned to the AASL National School Library Standards.  Students are encouraged to Inquire, Include, Collaborate, Curate, Explore and Engage.  Our students are curious, knowledge sharing, educated decision makers that continually explore the power of using information ethically.  We promote reading across the curriculum throughout the school day, during D.E.A.R. time and in our classroom independent and guided reading circles.  We give our students the MAP assessment three times per school year. The reading portion of this assessment provides a picture of our students' reading levels. The LEXILE range or reading level range is reported with a low number (showing the reading level at which students read with ease) and a high number (showing the reading level at which students may need assistance). Students are to use their most recent reading level scores to set their Destiny accounts to select books within their reading range.  If you have any questions or concerns about your student(s) LEXILE reading level please contact your child(ren)s Language Arts teacher or the Teacher-Librarian.

Circulation Policy

DeKalb County School District uses Destiny Library Automation System to manage print and electronic material circulation. Students are allowed to have two books checked out at a time for a period of three weeks. After the three week deadline, fines accrue at $.05 per day NOT to exceed a maximum of $1.00. Late fee notices are generated once a month and given to homeroom teachers for dissemination. All fees must be paid, using the exact dollar amount printed on the notice, by the end of the school year the fine was accrued.

Students have access to iPad's, desktop and laptop computers housed in the media center.  Printing student-created products is free of charge. Students are encouraged to use Galileo or databases linked through the Launchpad or Destiny to locate credible resources. See the Teacher-Librarian for login credentials.

Welcome to Sequoyah Middle School's Media Center!  Our library media program provides students and staff members, access to print and non-print materials and various forms of technology to support reading and mastery of the learning standards.
Our school's reading bowl team is student led.  We elect two officers to co-captain our team in the Winter after our competition.  We read 10 books over the summer and throughout the Fall semester, we meet to discuss these books twice a week, we do a Mock Reading Bowl at Sequoyah and we compete at the Annual Reading Bowl at Arabia Mountain High School on the last Saturday in January.   In the Winter and Spring after competition we continue to meet to work on team building, fun activites and read for pleasure as a group and individually to build our reading stamina.  Ask your Teacher-Librarian how you can join Sequoyah's Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team!
